MACOMB, Ill. – A total of 58 local teens participated in the 2019 MDH Volunteen Program, volunteering their time and effort in 22 different departments throughout McDonough District Hospital.
This summer, the teens nearly doubled the amount of service hours from the previous year clocking in at 1,182 volunteer hours in departments including: Acute Care/ICU, Emergency Services, Family Clinic, Food Services, Health Information Management, Home Health and Hospice, Infection Control, Inventory Control, Obstetrics, Outreach Services, Patient Financial Services, Pediatrics, Public Relations, Service Excellence, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Services, and Volunteer Services.
“The departments our Volunteens serve are so appreciative of their work. Their time and efforts make such an impact for our entire organization and those we serve,” shared MDH Volunteer Coordinator Meagan Smith.
The Volunteen Program provides community youth with opportunities for personal growth and development. Taking place every year throughout June and July, the program looks for responsible teens, age 13 and over, to volunteer up to 8 hours per week providing supplemental services throughout the organization and gaining personal satisfaction, maturity, and the understanding of various health careers. Application packets are available each year starting April 1 online at www.MDH.org.
“Being a part of this program goes beyond donating time to MDH, our Volunteens have the opportunity to learn about careers in health care and develop new skills to help in future endeavors. Many teens come to us without having previous work experience, but through volunteering they earn experience in: communication, customer service, organization, time management, and more. All components that can help build resumes for jobs and college applications,” added Smith.
