As a Level II Obstetrics Department, our highly trained and experienced staff provides 24-hour care before, during, and after your baby is born. From pregnancy through childbirth and beyond, McDonough District Hospital can provide you and your family with the care you need for a healthy beginning. MDH recognizes your choice for a healthcare provider is an important decision. Whether you choose an OB/GYN, or a nurse midwife for prenatal care and delivery, you are assured excellent, personal care. In addition, MDH has a certified pediatric and neonatal nurse practitioner on staff to provide care for newborns through age 18.

Nurse Navigator

As any expectant parent knows, the anticipation of giving birth can be both exciting and overwhelming. To help offset some of those apprehensions, we have developed an OB Nurse Navigator program. This new program helps parents-to-be feel confident and comfortable before delivery day arrives by adding an extra layer of one-on-one care for pregnancy, delivery and postpartum care.

Certified Lactation Counselors

The Certified Lactation Counselor® (CLC) certification is the premier National Certification in Lactation Management for the United States. CLC certification holders have demonstrated competence in the lactation skills, knowledge and attitudes that are essential to helping women in the United States, and have agreed to comply with The Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice code of ethics. The Lactation Counselor Training course is recognized by ANCC as a Nursing Skills Competency Program.

CLC certification means that a person has received training and competency verification in breastfeeding and human lactation support, including: assessing the latching and feeding process, providing corrective interventions, counseling mothers, understanding and applying knowledge of milk production including in special circumstances, and other commonly encountered situations. All of this give CLC's a strong foundation with which to help moms and babies.

Personal Touches

Onesie & Welcome Board – Our nurse navigators form a bond with our OB patients. They spend 9 months getting to know them and become their personal guide for pregnancy. Our nurses want to celebrate with the new moms too. The will deliver the onesie and a personal note to each patient after delivery or at the first postpartum check. The Welcome Baby Board gives parents a personalized backdrop to share details of their little one’s birthday!

Maternal-Fetal Medicine

The Southern Illinois University (SIU) Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) team, led by Dr. Abrams, has been providing services for MDH high-risk OB patients at their Springfield location, but are now offering telehealth services at MDH in the newly opened Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic. Patients that do not need to be seen in-person by a MFM Specialist at SIU can be seen here at MDH. SIU MFM telehealth appointments are by physician referral and are offered twice a month. According to Dr. Nicholas Viyuoh, OBGYN, “This will provide patients the convenience of maternal-fetal medicine services closer to home. We are excited for this opportunity to better serve our patients."

Celebration Meal

We want the new parent’s time in our Labor & Delivery department to be warm and welcoming. We also want to celebrate them and their new baby. We have begun offering a Celebration Dinner to celebrate the new mom and her guest with a special dinner after the baby is born. We offer several entrees including steak as well as sparkling cider in champagne flutes to share with a special someone.
