2009 Cancer Program Annual Report Featuring 2008 Statistics
A Message From the MDH Cancer Program Chairman, Jerome Anderson, DO

We'vecome along another year in our ongoing commitment to comprehensive cancer care at McDonough District Hospital. Through the dedicated efforts of our nurses, physicians, cancer registry personnel, and other support staff, the patients of McDonough County and the region continue to receive state-of-the-art evaluations and treatments for the most common cancers diagnosed in our local population.
In addition to the latest mobile PET/CT scanning equipment (used for staging and restaging of many common types of cancers), our community is fortunate to have the Macomb Oncology Institute, which commenced radiation therapy treatments in January 2009. We also perform extensive diagnostic and surgical procedures, enabling our medical staff to identify malignancies at the earliest possible stages, which has clearly been shown to improve long term survival for cancer patients. Our community can be very proud of the wide-ranging cancer treatment services available here at MDH.
Since 1983, MDH's Cancer Program has been accredited by the American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer (CoC).This is an indication of our commitment to providing outstanding cancer services at MDH.
On behalf of the McDonough District Hospital Cancer Committee, I am pleased to present the 2009 Cancer Program Annual Report, featuring 2008 statistics.
Cancer Committee
The MDH Cancer Committee, consisting of a wide range of health professionals, meets quarterly to review new policies, new programs, patient care evaluations, and the cancer registry database.
Cancer Registry
The cancer registrar at MDH, Jane Schneider, provides information for the CoC natioanl database and maintains data on newly diagnosed and/or treated cancers. The Cancer Registry is designed to aid in determining the frequency of cancers and the stage or extent of cancer at time of diagnosis, tracking treatments received, and following patients for life.
