MDH ADDS PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN

McDonough District Hospital has hired a primary care physician and continues to recruit physicians to help meet the health care needs in the MDH service area.

rotondo_erica_color_02Erica Rotondo, D.O., will practice as a primary care physician through the McDonough Medical Group with an office in Health Services Building #2, starting in late April or early May, according to MDH President/CEO Stephen Hopper.

After obtaining her bachelor’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Rotondo received her medical degree from the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. She participated in a surgical residency and osteopathic internship at St. John Oakland Hospital in Madison Heights, Michigan and was a family practice resident at John C.Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. She completed a fellowship in Health Policy Studies from New York Institute of Technology.

With the national shortage of primary care physicians and recent changes in physician status in the MDH service region, the hospital’s decision to hire a physician to practice primary care through an employment arrangement is a new approach. Hospital employment is an option some physicians are considering as an alternative to establishing an individual practice or joining existing physician groups.

While the hospital continues to support physician recruitment for local medical practices, MDH has started to provide hospital employment as an option to broaden physician recruitment choices, according to Hopper

“The hospital continues to focus on the recruitment of physicians to the community. We are working with our area physician offices to bring additional candidates to MDH and local practices in primary care and specialty areas,” Hopper said. “The loss of a few physicians has put a strain on area medical practices and we appreciate the extra efforts the medical community has made to serve the health care needs in the community.”
