MDH Endoscopy Standards of Excellence Recognition
The Endoscopy Unit of McDonough District Hospital (MDH) recently earned the Certificate of Recognition of Quality in Endoscopy for standards of excellence from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).
ASGE is a professional association devoted to “advancing patient care and digestive health by promoting excellence in endoscopy.” MDH was one of 33 endoscopy units recognized for setting standards in endoscopic training and practice. To date, 167 endoscopy units have been recognized by the ASGE.
To be eligible for this award, an endoscopy unit must assume quality-related ASGE and Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines as unit policy, and a representative of the endoscopy office or unit must complete the ASGE course designed to review these concepts. MDH Director of Surgical Services, Linda J. Sampson, attended and completed this course.
“The course provided the latest information on improving quality and safety for patients in the endoscopy unit,” Sampson said. “Interacting with participants from throughout the United States and other countries provided additional information regarding successful and efficient systems in place at other facilities.”
Along with earning this highly prestigious title among the Endoscopy Unit, MDH will also receive a number of benefits associated with the award. For example, they will obtain public and professional recognition on the ASGE Web site through the posting of its name on a list of Certificate of Recognition awardees.
Dr. David Greathouse, internal medicine, who has been a long standing member of ASGE, and Dr. Chris Martin, general surgery, who recently joined the MDH medical staff, both perform endoscopies for patients at MDH. With new renovations now complete in the Endoscopy Unit, outpatients are prepped and complete post-procedure recovery on the main floor of the hospital near the extended Endoscopy suites. The renovated facilities are more accessible for family and friends who accompany patients during these procedures.
Approximately 100 visitors toured the newly renovated Endoscopy Unit at the MDH community open house February 7.
