SCOPE OUT THE FACTS ABOUT COLORECTAL CANCER

McDonough District Hospital will host a free education program on Wednesday, March 3, in honor of colorectal cancer awareness month. “Scope out the Facts About Colorectal Cancer,” will be held at 6:00PM in Auditoriums A & B, located on the lower level of the hospital.

David Greathouse, D.O., of the Lamoine Valley Clinic, will be the featured speaker for the evening. Dr. Greathouse is board certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in gastroenterology. He will address commonly asked questions about prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of colon and rectal cancer. Dr. Greathouse performs nearly 1,000 colonoscopies at MDH each year. He has been a member of the MDH Medical Staff since 1989.

Other presentations will include the following:

•Explore the new endoscopy unit: Kurt Mayo, Registered Nurse from Lamoine Valley Clinic, will explain various prep options for colonoscopy. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the endoscopy suite with Mayo and Dr. Greathouse to learn more about the procedure and equipment that is used for colonoscopy.

•The Meaning of Screening: Diane Tate, Health Educator from MDH Outreach Services, will briefly explain the Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) kit as a first step in the detection of colorectal cancer and all participants will receive a free kit. The FOBT kit is recommended every year for anyone over 50 or at an earlier age if you have a family history or symptoms of the disease. These kits are funded through generous donations designated for health education and screenings.

The test kit checks for blood in your bowel movement (stool) and is completed in the privacy of your home. Participants will receive detailed instructions and educational information with the test kit. The completed test kit is then returned to MDH Outreach Services and a free analysis will be conducted if the kit is returned by Friday, April 30. Each participant and their physician will be notified of the results.

If you are unable to attend the program but would like a free kit, simply stop by the MDH Outreach Services department, located on the third floor of the hospital, anytime during the month of March. Office hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM. Before or after hours, test kits can be obtained and returned to the MDH Admitting/Registration department, located on the first floor near the front entrance of the hospital.

For more information about the educational program or the test kits, please contact MDH Outreach Services at (309) 836-1584.
