Laboratory

Located on the first floor of MDH.

Using state-of-the-art technology, the MDH Laboratory provides clinical, anatomical, and nuclear medicine procedures that aid in diagnosis and treatment. Working closely with pathologists, the experienced MDH Laboratory staff takes pride in providing accurate information and timely results for patients and medical support staff.

Laboratory Services

  • Hematology – routine blood cell counts including Hemoglobin and Hematocrit
  • Urinalysis – examination of urine specimens for bacterial infections, etc.
  • Coagulation – Protime testing for monitoring of Coumadin dosages, working cooperatively with the Anticoagulation Clinic in the monitoring of patient’s INR values.
  • Histology – surgical pathology of tissue specimens
  • Cytology – Pap smears; fine needle aspiration exams
  • Microbiology – studying microorgamisms (bacteria; AFB, fungi, viruses)
  • Serology – testing for various diseases, including allergies
  • Transfusion Services – pre-transfusion services of blood products for inpatients and outpatients
  • Chemistry – routine chemistry testing, including glucose, lipid profile, and cardiac testing
  • Urine Drug Testing – collection of urine specimens; Licensed DOT and Non-DOT Collectors; off-site collection in community also available.
  • Nuclear Medicine - Nuclear scans, including bone and cardiac exams
  • Mobile PET/CT scans
  • Wellness screenings – offering a variety of tests (ie. blood cholesterol) in the community and for workplace screenings.(309) 836-1530

Hours of Service

The public Laboratory hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  

Patients must register in our Admitting/Registration Department before coming to the Laboratory for tests. Many of our blood tests can be collected in the Admitting/Registration Department without coming to the Laboratory.  

Calling ahead or pre-registering can speed up your visit to the hospital and the Laboratory. Please call Admitting/Registration at (309) 836-1585.

Some specialty tests must be scheduled.  Routine Urine Drug Collections are performed 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Accreditation

The MDH Laboratory, staffed by pathologists, medical technologists, nuclear technicians, histologists, phlebotomists, medical laboratory technicians, and receptionists, is accredited by the Commission of Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff’s qualifications, the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory. This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for the laboratory’s patients. The MDH Laboratory is one of more than 6,000 CAP-accredited laboratories nationwide.
