About Us

A Hospital Caring”  Summary of Services

McDonough District Hospital has been a source of healing, caring, and hope since we first opened our doors to the people of western Illinois in 1958. Through the years, we have continually expanded our high quality services for people at all stages of their lives. Today, MDH has grown to become a 113-bed healthcare facility providing an impressive spectrum of advanced medical treatments and personalized health services. What has remained constant is our commitment to providing healthcare in an atmosphere of compassion and caring.

MDH is accredited by The Joint Commission and is a member of the Voluntary Hospitals of America, Inc., and the Illinois Hospital & Health Systems Association. MDH operates based on revenues from the people it serves and has not levied property taxes since the 1980's.

MDH has an active medical staff of more than 35 physicians, representing many specialties. In addition to the active medical staff, there are several associated mid-level practitioners with advanced training who work closely with their supervising physicians to provide care to patients. In order to serve the wide range of healthcare needs of the MDH service region, several visiting specialists schedule appointments on a regular basis.

McDonough District Hospital is the second largest employer in McDonough County, with over 500 employees whose mission, in partnership with the medical staff, is to ‘provide health services with a personal approach to care that enhance the quality of life.’ The hospital also has many dedicated men and women who volunteer their time to provide comfort and assistance to patients and their families, and whose fundraising efforts have provided financial support to the hospital.

As a district hospital, MDH provides general and acute health services to individuals and families from our immediate community as well as the region. In addition, MDH offers services and programs related to the provision of health promotion, maintenance, and care.

A hospital wouldn’t be a hospital without the dedicated nursing staff that provides care on a daily basis to inpatients. MDH maintains a 97-bed acute care unit for medical, surgical, and pediatric patients, a 7-bed Intensive Care Unit for critically ill patients, and a 16-bed transitional care unit for patients requiring skilled nursing care and therapies between their hospital stay and the return home. The 10-bed Obstetrics department also features 3 LDR (Labor/Delivery/Recovery) rooms and a 12-bed nursery.

The 24-hour advanced life support ambulance service and emergency room is staffed with highly trained paramedics, nurses, and physicians who work together to provide transport, evaluation, and treatment to patients with varying levels of illness or injury. To expedite delivery of critically ill patients for treatment not provided by the hospital, helicopter transport service is available from a variety of tertiary centers in the region.

From general, urological, laser, obstetrical and gynecological surgeries to ophthalmologic, orthopedic and vascular surgeries, MDH offers a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient surgeries using the latest technology, techniques and high level of expertise rarely found in smaller hospitals.

The clinical and support staff in the Obstetrics department provides care for mother and baby during all phases of pregnancy, including a full range of childbirth and infant care classes, and a lactation specialist who can assist mothers who have questions or concerns with breastfeeding. The department provides 24-hour patient care to laboring women, pregnant women with obstetrical complications, and postpartum women and their newborns as well as providing post-operative care to women who have undergone some gynecologic procedures.

Offering individual, group, and family therapy, the professional counseling staff in the Behavioral Health Services department offers customer-focused care to those in need of behavior modification programs and mental health services.

The Home Health and Hospice Care teams cover a multi-county area offering health services in the home setting to acute, chronic, and terminally ill patients in need of nursing care or rehabilitation therapy.

Outreach Services provides a full spectrum of programs and services designed to promote health and wellness, including screenings for cancer, stroke, and osteoporosis; blood pressure and blood glucose testing; weight management, CPR and first aid classes; flu shot clinics; an anticoagulation clinic; and memory support services for caregivers and individuals with Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders. Dietitians, nurses, and educators at the Diabetes Education Center provide individualized consultations and teach self-management skills that help prevent long-term complications. Day Health Services offers health-related services and social activities for seniors so they are better able to function independently in their own home or with their families.

Rehabilitation Services provides evaluation and treatment for inpatients and outpatients requiring therapy resulting from injury, surgery, and disease. From pediatrics to geriatrics, the professional staff offers services in the hospital setting as well as an outpatient clinic. Services include: physical and occupational therapy, industrial rehabilitation, cardiac and pulmonary rehab, sports medicine, and speech/language pathology.

Patients don’t have to go out of town to experience high quality diagnostic services. From the 16-slice Spiral CT scanner in the Radiology department, and the Vivid 7 in the Cardiopulmonary department that produces crystal clear images of the heart and blood vessels, to the chemistry analyzer in the Laboratory, MDH provides state-of-the-art technology and equipment that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of many illnesses. Mobile MRI and PET imaging systems are also available at MDH on a weekly basis.

In addition to the many clinical services, MDH offers a number of amenities for patients and visitors, including advocacy services to assist patients and their family with financial, social, and emotional issues during the hospital stay and upon discharge; the Larry T. Westervelt Home for family and friends needing short term accommodations close to the hospital; the Pendell Garden for a nice place to relax and enjoy the outdoors; and the gift shop where visitors may purchase a number of gift items and sundries, including fresh flowers, cards, jewelry, stuffed animals, magazines, and snacks.

Together with the medical staff, the patient care team, support staff, and volunteers strive to exceed your expectations and pledge to be “more than hospital care….a hospital caring.”
